It took almost 17 years, a nudge from the NBA, a bigger nudge from his family, on-line courses and community college offerings, guidance from academic counselors at Cal and the constant support of his boss, Geoff Petrie. And it required personal discipline and an unhealthy number of sleepless nights. But on Monday, Abdur-Rahim, the Kings' assistant general manager, officially graduated from Cal.
Girls love to shop 'til they drop' and it often starts at a young age. That's precisely what happened when the girls of Future Foundation had an opportunity to participate in the Mind, Body, and Soul workshop:, The Rise of the Rose. The girls began the afternoon by attending the empowerment workshop, led by several speakers, where they learned the characteristics of being valuable young women: self-respect, showing initiative, good behavior, and having positive motives.
The Epsilon Psi Chapter and Gamma Chi Chapter Alumni Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. gathered to help teach our young male students about unity through "Stepping," a form of dance where the body is used to make sound by stomping, clapping, or spoken words. Stepping is an activity often done in fraternities and sororities and our students had the pleasure to experience this tradition from one of the longest-standing African American fraternities.
Honoring Our Mothers
Although he left college after one year, Shareef continued his education in the off seasons through summer courses. During his 12 year career, he became an NBA All-Star, Olympic gold medalist, and founded Future Foundation. Shareef concludes the story by saying, "balancing a 12- year career in the NBA, now a front office job, family and school wasn't always easy and it took many years to accomplish- yet failing was not an option."
Future Foundation's RESTORE Program was designed to help high risk teens impacted by the juvenile system chart a successful path. One of the participants, Jarvis Rahim, from Metro Atlanta has shown tremendous achievement.
Spring is in the air and juniors and seniors participating in our daily teen center had an awesome opportunity to tour southern college campuses, last week. A healthy dosage of teen center activities include exposing participants to post secondary opportunities through our College for All Program (CAP).
